Wow, what a gorgeous and big week it has been! How has yours been? I hope it has been wonderful!

I had a gorgeous weekend of oils classes last weekend! I was able to connect and chat to so many women, it really was just so wonderful.

To today’s oil! Lavender!

I have had a pretty big focus the last week or so on Stress. The workshop I ran on Saturday was all about how we can use essential oils to support us with our stress levels, and I would love to talk more about that today!

Stress is now the number one cause of all illness, and it is all pervasive in our lives. Stress is a feeling you have when you face a situation you think you cannot manage. You can feel anxious, irritable, forgetful, sleepless and unable to cope. There are many factors that contribute to stress in your body, and learning to soothe your body, is one way to support yourself.
Activating the para-sympathetic nervous system to ‘rest and digest’ instead of our (what has become our) normal ‘fight or flight’ is essential in soothing the body.

Doing things like yoga, deep breathing, soothing exercise, taking pleasure and meditation are all incredible ways to allow what I call the ‘decompression’ to take place, and for you to shift into your rest and digest mode.
This is the mode that is going to make you feel good! It will make your hair shine, your fingernails be hard and strong and for you to have a lovely libido. None of these things are important, when your body is feeling like you are running from a tiger!

However, essential oils also have a place here too!

There are essential oils which have properties that are also capable of reducing inflammation, improving immunity, balancing hormones, and helping with sleep and digestion

A small pilot study held in 2008 (Pemberton E, Turpin) evaluated the effect of topical application of essential oils Lavender and Sage on work related stress of nurses in an ICU setting. Results demonstrated a decreased perception of stress!

This study in 2006 also concluded that “the results suggest that the inhalation method using essential oils can be considered an effective nursing intervention that reduces psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension’.

Lavender oil is one of the most common essential oils that most people have had an experience with. Whether it be an old drawer sachet or you know that it supports your sleep, Lavender has been studied extensively for many of its properties. The benefits of lavender include having a calming, relaxing effect, but it’s also considered a nervous system restorative and helps with inner peace, sleep, restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, nervous stomach and general nervous tension.

I use Lavender oil every day! It is the primary oil which I use to help me sleep at night. I am rolling it on my feet, using it in the diffuser that I put in the bedroom and inhaling it direct from the bottle when I feel the need to calm down.
I also place a couple of drops directly into my bath water, with epsom salts (for added magnesium).

The other amazing use for Lavender is on your blemishes! A drop of lavender on a pimple does wonders, and it is wonderful post sun exposure, if you have some sun burn.
Pop some drops in a spritz bottle with water, and spray directly on to the burn. Some peppermint oil added in also is beautiful, as it is very cooling!
